Luke was born on May 18, 2008 at 3:26pm. He weighed 2 pounds and was 13 1/2 inches long. He had ten tiny fingers, ten tiny toes, brown hair and brown eyes like his mommy, long legs like his brother, and his daddy's nose. He tried to cry with all his might, but his lungs were not mature. He was in for a fight and we knew it. After the nurses got him ready to go to the nicu they brought him by so I could see him for a moment. He was perfect. When he heard my voice, he opened his eyes as much as he was able and looked for me. I told him I loved him and would see him soon. Later that evening, the neonatologist came by to talk to us about Luke's condition. He was stable but he had a tough road ahead of him. He had pulmonary hypoplasia (underdevoloped lungs) due to prolonged lack of amniotic fluid. His lungs would never be at full capacity. He would always have issues with his lungs. And he was 13 weeks premature. He was a fighter! I just knew it. Before Jim and Matt left the hospital that night, they stopped by the nicu. They could not go in to see Luke, so the looked through the window. Luke was in an oxygen tent and on a respirator. He was not happy about it. He kicked and waved his arms about. Matt was worried his brother was going to get in trouble! Luke was putting up quite a fight!
